As a ghostwriter, it can be easy to get caught up in the endless cycle of doing work just to get our paycheck.
Don’t get me wrong – I love writing for my clients. What I don’t love is the idea that if I am not working on a project, I am not getting paid. That’s what residual income is for.
The only problem with this is that it is too easy to pack up my schedule too tight. When I am not working on a project, I am securing the next project.
I haven’t spent enough time on my own income building activities such as working on this blog or starting an affiliate website.
The only way I am going to ever have time for these things is if I make the time. I have realized that I need to treat myself like a client. Basically, I need to schedule time for myself – otherwise I will make a million excuses as to why I don’t have the time. Then, I will never make any forward progress. I will always be stuck in the same place.
So, I made a list of projects that will help me make passive income. If I need to, I’ll give these projects deadlines. I read somewhere that freelance writers should spend 50% of their time working for clients and 50% working on their own projects.
This seems like a good split to me and one that will definitely have me reaching my online income goals. The trick, then, is to implement this routine on a daily basis until my overall income is what I want it to be.
I haven’t really been taking on additional clients but I do need to complete the work I did commit to. So, I think the 50/50 split is more than fair, especially on the days leading up to my weekly deadlines.
